Orchid and tropical bonsai show: into the mist
Client: Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
Year: 2023
For Phipps Conservatory’s Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show: Into the Mist, I created a detailed, scientific colored pencil illustration of a Darwin orchid (Angraecum sesquipedale), which was incorporated into a display depicting an explorer’s table and notebook. Set in a weathered journal among props such as a magnifying glass and real orchids, the drawing appeared as if it belonged to a 19th-century naturalist documenting a rare find. This context connected the artwork to themes of exploration, evolution, and scientific curiosity while immersing visitors in the atmosphere of botanical discovery.
